Deming Police Chief Brandon Gigante said 24-year-old Alexandria Martinez took a family member’s vehicle without permission, and the key ring which contained the vehicle’s keys also contained keys to Deming High School, where the family member was employed.
Gigante said two of his officers on bike patrol – Lee Cook and Zach Sigman – noticed a maroon pickup in the high school parking lot and a light inside a classroom, and stopped to investigate.
Cook and Sigman saw Martinez rummaging through a box in the classroom.
Gigante said the two were observing Martinez when their police radios went off, spooking Martinez, who fled the classroom but not the building.
School officials arrived and unlocked the high school, so officers could search for Martinez, who was found hiding.
Martinez was charged with breaking-and-entering.
