According to a media release, WNMU social work students will learn and lend expertise in the youth-oriented service environment, while education students will focus on the education piece of the learning experience provided through AmeriSpan, a study-abroad program the provides language and cultural lessons plus service-learning for international students.
The students will be in Costa Rica from November 21st through December 2nd, and will receive a certificate for the service-learning provided as well as a certificate of completion for the 20 hours of Spanish-language and culture classes they will undertake in Costa Rica.
And the trip will provide opportunities to visit the rain forest and beaches, and become familiar with Costa Rican culture.
The ten WNMU ambassadors to Costa Rica for fall 2013 are Olivia Morales… Miriam Guzman Ortega… Jessica Ortega… Yossie Nieblas… Irene Trejo… Magali Gomez… Arrianna Estrada… Ana Barraza… Cassandra Freer… and Bob Harvey. The trip has been organized by Dr. Maria Eugenia Trillo.
This is the first study trip abroad organized for the WNMU Spanish program, which now offers a new Spanish for Heritage Learners major, a minor for Spanish as a Second Language and a concentration in Spanish in the Master of Interdisciplinary Arts program.
