DEMING – A Deming man is facing multiple charges in connection to two collisions Thursday night, including one that injured a Deming Police Department officer. Police Capt. Louis Tavizon said 30-year-old Juan Valdez has been charged with DWI involving great bodily harm by vehicle, aggravated battery on a peace officer, aggravated fleeing from a law enforcement officer, leaving the scene of an accident, improper equipment, no insurance, and on a lighted-lamps violation.
Tavizon said Valdez, who was driving a 1996 Ford two-door truck, intentionally rammed a police unit driven by Officer Garret Gifford because Gifford had been pursuing Valdez for an earlier hit-and-run that occurred near Cody and Walnut.
Tavizon said Gifford was transported to the hospital with head, neck and back injuries following the collision, which occurred when Valdez spun his truck around on State Road 11 and deliberately drove into Gifford’s unit.
Valdez was arrested by Officer Joshua Mooridian a short while later.
