Deming Police Chief Bobby Orosco said their investigation led them to believe the inmate, identified as 40-year-old Joshua Mirka, was at a bus station in downtown El Paso, TX.
Orosco said that’s where Mirka was taken into custody at just after 10 a.m. Tuesday by El Paso Police Department officers and Texas Rangers, following a brief struggle.
Mirka escaped from the Deming jail at about 8 p.m. Monday where he had been held since July 27th after being arrested by New Mexico State Police following a pursuit in the Deming area.
He was charged with aggravated fleeing from a law enforcement officer and battery on a peace officer, and was being held on a Washington, California, probation and parole violation warrant for failing to register as a sex offender.
State Police officials said he also is a person of interest in connection with an armed robbery in California.
Orosco said the escape remains under investigation.
