Deming Police Captain Bobby Orosco said the teen was 16-year-old Eduardo Chavira, who lived on East Fourth Street.
Orosco said Chavira and five other teens were walking northbound near the intersection of North Pearl and Railroad Avenue at just after 9 p.m. Sunday when a westbound Union Pacific train struck Chavira, throwing him clear of the tracks.
Orosco said three of his companions had already crossed the tracks, and two stopped short of the tracks before the train arrived.
Chavira was transported to Mimbres Memorial Hospital by ambulance, where he died from injuries sustained in the accident.
Orosco said they are interviewing Union Pacific personnel and reviewing evidence, but initial indications point to the death being simply a tragic accident.
