
(Deming) – A van and an SUV collided Friday at about 4:30 p.m. at the intersection of Sunshine Road and the Columbus Highway, sending three people to the hospital.
According to a Luna County Sheriff’s Department report, a blue Ford SUV was being driven west on Sunshine Road by 26-year-old Martha Madrid of Las Cruces and did not stop and yield to oncoming traffic at the Columbus Highway intersection.
Madrid’s vehicle then collided with a red Chevrolet van being driven north on the Columbus Highway by 45-year-old Alicia Zamora of Columbus.
Madrid was transported with neck, back and internal injuries, and Zamora was transported with head, neck, chest and back injuries.
Also, a passenger in Madrid’s SUV – 29-year-old Isela Nevarez of Deming – was transported with shoulder and other injuries.
A second passenger in Madrid’s vehicle, 41-year-old Roberto Alvidrez of Mesquite, was uninjured.
The passengers – Nevarez and Alvidrez – both admitted to drinking in the vehicle prior to the crash and were cited for having open containers, and Madrid was cited for failing to yield.
