Community Relations Volunteer Coordinator Carol Brewka said residents are signing pledges of support for a proposed magnesium quarry at the base of the Florida Mountains and a processing plant at the Peru Mill Industrial Park.
An application to open the quarry and processing plant is currently under review by officials at the state and the Bureau of Land Management.
Brewka said the project’s managing member, David Tognoni of Elephant Butte, has conducted several public and small-group meetings to educate residents about the project.
She added that this is the kind of project needed in Deming because it will bring what she described as “an environmentally clean” industry to the area and provide good paying jobs.
Brewka said anyone wishing to sign the petition may stop by Deming Orthodontics at 710 S. Gold Avenue in Deming.
