Perkett’s essay will advance to the zone level where he will compete against winners from other Optimist Clubs in Las Cruces, Silver City and Lordsburg.
The winner of the zone competition will advance to the district level with the chance to win a scholarship.
Club President Charles “Tony” Sayre said Perkett did a wonderful job presenting his essay and the members of the Deming Optimist Club have no doubt Perkett has a bright future ahead of him.
The Optimist Club of Deming has been participating in the Optimist Oratorical Contest for more than 45 years and has been active in the community since 1956.
Other Deming Optimist Club programs and service projects include the Hamburger Fry for fall athletes and new staff, Optimist Junior Golf, Youth Appreciation Week and annual support for four Little League Teams.
