
According to New Mexico State Police officers, 38-year-old James Laney of Shady Point, Oklahoma, was northbound on State Road 198, near mile marker 2, at about 8 p.m. Sunday when he lost control of his vehicle.
Officers said the vehicle slid off the west side of the roadway and overturned several times as it rolled down a steep embankment.
Laney, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected from the vehicle and sustained fatal injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
A passenger, identified as 38-year-old Latrisha Laney from Deming, sustained minor injuries.
State Police officials said the crash is still under investigation.
