
Internationally known Hispanic/American novelist, poet, playwright and teacher Denise Chavez will be speaking Friday at 1 p.m. in the Columbus library.
Chavez’s appearance is sponsored by the Columbus Village Library, Friends of the Library and the Columbus Village Book Club.
According to a media release, Chavez believes in the power of writing to heal lives and to heal the many borders between people – borders that are both real and imagined.
She is the founder and director of the Border Book Festival, the longest running book festival in New Mexico.
Chavez has been recognized with the Hispanic Heritage Award, the American Book Award, the Lila Wallace–Readers’ Digest Fellowship, Writers of the Pass, the New Mexico Governor’s Award in Literature and an Honorary Doctorate from the University of New Mexico.
After the presentation at the library, the public is invited to a reception for Chavez at the San Jose Grocery and Restaurant located at 400 East Jesus Carreon in Columbus. Refreshments will be provided.
