Wednesday near a tractor-trailer crash scene on Interstate 10 has died, a state police spokesman said.
Officer Robert Potter, 41, of Alamogordo died at Memorial Medical Hospital in Las Cruces after suffering a massive heart attack on Wednesday, New Mexico State Police Lt. Robert McDonald said.
Potter was one of several officers who were staging in the National Truck Stop parking lot in Vado, located directly across from where a tractor-trailer crashed into another 18-wheeler on eastbound I-10 .
A witness said Potter was holding a door for someone when he suddenly collapsed. "Officer Potter was a friend to all in MTDP and many throughout DPS and the state of New Mexico," McDonald said. "As a proud veteran of the armed forces and a seven-year veteran of MTDP he will be dearly missed. Please keep the family of Officer Potter, his wife JoAnne and their son Matthew Duke in your thoughts and prayers," McDonald said. Further information on services will be announced when available, according to McDonald.
