Sen. Joseph Cervantes said the Governor's proposal to force teachers to pay more into the pension system was "against New Mexican" values and vowed Democrats would fight it.
Deming School Superintendent Dr. Dan Lere said that each school district must have what is called a “Fund-Ends Balance” of around 5% that ties into the next year’s budget. Lere said that Gov. Martinez is talking about taking away any funding over 5%. Lere said if this is approved, it likely will not affect the Deming District because Deming is operating at less than 5%.
Lere said that if teachers are forced to pay more for their pension and insurances, their take home pay would be less.
