(Deming) – The New Mexico Arts’ Art in Public Places program will meet in Deming this Wednesday.
According to the meeting notice, the purpose of the meeting is to address the purchase selection of public art for the Sixth Judicial District Court Complex, the Luna County Sheriff’s Office/Law Enforcement Complex, the Deming Fire Substation and the Columbus City Hall.
In 1986, the New Mexico State Legislature passed and the governor signed into law the Art in Public Places Act, which requires that a portion of appropriations for capital expenditures be set aside for the acquisition or commissioning of works of art to be used in, upon or around public buildings.
The resulting Art in Public Places program is often referred to as the “One-Percent for Art” program because of the requirement that for each appropriation exceeding $100,000, agencies shall allocate 1% or $200,000, whichever is less, for the acquisition and installation of works of art for new or newly renovated buildings.
The Arts in Public Places meeting is scheduled from 1-5 p.m. Wednesday in the council chambers of the John Strand Municipal Building on South Gold.
The meeting is open to the public.
