Rodriguez said the recount has been tentatively scheduled for Friday, July 1st, pending an order from the State Canvassing Board, which meets Tuesday, June 28th.
By state statute, official election results for statewide and multi-county offices are declared on the third Tuesday after the election by the state canvassing board, consisting of the Governor, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court and the Secretary of State.
The Secretary of State’s website is showing Chavez leading Chandler by 16 votes – 892 to 876 out of 1,768 counted.
District 32 encompasses all of Luna County, most of Hidalgo County and one Grant County precinct, so those counties will be involved in the recount as well.
Luna County Election Administrator Leslie Nabours said the procedure of a recount involves hand-tallying 100 random ballots each from early voting, absentee voting and Election Day voting, then feeding those 300 random ballots through the electronic voting machine and comparing results.
If the results match, all ballots are re-fed for the official recount total. If the results do not match, an investigation begins to determine the cause of the inaccuracy.
Nabours said the people involved in the recount are precinct board members who worked Election Day, along with the county clerk and a District Court judge or member of the bar appointed by the judge.
