A construction update provided by the school district revealed that the new building, with more than 200,000 square feet, will be located between the Hofacket gym and the district auditorium, where the bus parking lot and soccer field are currently located.
The main entrance will be on Iron Street.
New sports fields, including soccer, will be built where the main campus currently sits.
The north half of the Hofacket building will be repurposed during the project, including the gym, cafeteria, library, front office area, and classrooms located in those areas. The southern portion of the building will be demolished.
The two-story design will support the use of new technologies. In addition, the instructional departments will be consolidated.
To increase safety and traffic flow, there will be separate parking and drop-off areas for parents, visitors, buses, faculty and staff.
Ground breaking is scheduled for February 2016 with construction of the new building complete in August 2017. The district hopes to have the entire project complete by April 2018.
Voters in Luna County passed a bond to build the new high school in February. By next February, the district is planning on having a schematic design of the new high school.
Greer Stafford Architecture, from Albuquerque, is designing the new school. In addition to Deming High School, Greer Stafford has worked on a number of school construction projects, including Los Lunas High School and Bloomfield High School.
