
50-year-old Scott Coleman was pronounced dead early Tuesday morning after falling approximately 75-feet sometime Monday afternoon or evening.
Coleman was in the area to attend his brother’s funeral and reportedly went out about 4 p.m. Monday. His family called 911 at just before 11 p.m. when Coleman had not returned.
Coleman’s rental vehicle was located by family members on Stirrup Road about 10 p.m. Monday, and family friends began climbing the mountain in that area.
They were about half-way up the mountain when they heard Scott respond to their calls. The location information was given to Luna County Sheriff’s deputies, who were finally able to reach Coleman at about 12:30 a.m. Tuesday.
Coleman had extensive injuries from the fall, and died from the injuries at just before 4 a.m. as he was being taken down the mountain by Deming Fire Department emergency responders.
