
Preliminary figures from the New Mexico Department of Workforce Solutions show Luna County with a January unemployment rate of 17.9%, up from the revised December rate of 16.9%, but down from the January 2017 rate of 19.9%.
Luna remains the only New Mexico county with double-digit unemployment.
Other counties with high unemployment in January were Sierra at 9.2%, McKinley at 8.2%, Catron at 8.4% and Mora at 8.1%.
In our area, Grant County had 5.9% unemployment in January, Hidalgo County had 5.5% and the Las Cruces area had 6.9%.
The counties with the least unemployment in January were Los Alamos and Union – both at 3.4%.
Unemployment statewide was 5.9% in January – down slightly from December.
The New Mexico labor force estimates show Luna County with a labor force of 10,069 – with 8,267 employed and 1,802 unemployed.
