The U.S. Department of Agriculture Wednesday designated six New Mexico counties – including Luna — and one Texas county as natural disaster areas due to drought.
The other counties are Dona Ana, Grant, Hidalgo, Otero and Sierra counties in New Mexico and Texas' El Paso County.
The natural disaster designation means farmers and ranchers in Luna and the other counties are eligible for natural disaster assistance.
That aid primarily consists of low-interest loans from the Farm Service Agency.
