Jessica Jara, coordinator of the county’s Partnerships for Success II program, said the information shows that substance abuse prevention is having mixed success in Deming and Luna County.
Jara said several recently released survey results show stagnant or rising levels of underage drinking depending on the age group, but added that community-wide perceptions have moved in a positive direction.
Also, research shows that underage drinking in social settings is a persistent problem in the community, with majorities in each survey indicating youth access alcohol at parties or from someone’s home.
In early January, the county’s Social Host Ordinance took effect, which outlines the means for law enforcement in the county to cite those deemed responsible for hosting an underage drinking party.
