The day-long event, called ‘Down in Deming,’ will begin at 8:30 a.m. at Deming High School with a free breakfast for local youth ages 12 to 17. Following breakfast, the youth will break into groups to attend presentations on domestic and teen dating violence, drug and alcohol abuse, bullying, and pharmaceutical drug abuse.
DWI Program Preventionist Teresa Ortberg said they hope ‘Down in Deming’ will provide a fun, informative atmosphere.
Local students previously surveyed said domestic and teen dating violence was their highest concern, followed by drug and alcohol abuse, then bullying, and drug trafficking and sales.
DWI program staff reportedly saw the survey results and felt the expo would be a good way to educate youth on the issues that concern them.
Prizes, food and music will be offered during the expo, which is scheduled to conclude at 7 p.m.
Six agencies have signed up for vendor booths in the entrance of DHS and there is still space available.
