A colonia is defined as a rural community with a population of 25,000 or less that is located within 150 miles of the U.S.-Mexico border and that has been designated as a colonia by a municipality or county due to lack of potable water, an adequate sewage system or decent, safe and sanitary housing. The colonia has to have been in existence prior to October 1st, 1989.
The Colonias Infrastructure Act of 2010 establishes a Colonias Infrastructure Board and dedicates 5% of the state’s annual senior severance tax bond proceeds for a variety of infrastructure projects within the colonias, including water, wastewater, solid waste disposal, flood control, road or housing projects.
The county meetings are set for Monday, January 13th at 3 p.m. and Wednesday, January 15th at 5 p.m. Both meetings will be held in the commission chambers, located on the third-floor of the Luna County Courthouse. The meetings are open to the public.
