AFSCME Representative Rob Trombley told KOTS/KDEM news that officers from both county departments reached out separately to the union last fall seeking representation.
Trombley said that after his organization received a majority of employee signatures in each department requesting the formation of unions, they notified the New Mexico Labor Board of the requests.
Union officials were in Deming February 22nd for a hearing before the New Mexico Labor Board to determine union members’ eligibility.
Trombley said a second meeting was held this past Sunday, April 24th, in Deming with county employees. At that meeting, it was announced that the official vote to unionize will be held May 25th and 26th.
AFSCME represents over 12,000 county and municipal employees in New Mexico, including Hidalgo County sheriff and detention officers, Grant County sheriff and detention officers, and Dona Ana County detention officers, as well as officers in Bernalillo, Santa Fe and other cities and counties around New Mexico.
