AFSCME Representative Rob Trombley told KOTS/KDEM news that officers from both county departments reached out separately to the union last fall seeking representation.
Trombley said that after his organization received a majority of employee signatures in each department requesting the formation of unions, they notified the New Mexico Labor Board of the requests.
AFSCME represents over 12,000 county and municipal employees in New Mexico, including Hidalgo County sheriff and detention officers, Grant County sheriff and detention officers, and Dona Ana County detention officers, as well as officers in Bernalillo, Santa Fe and other cities and counties around New Mexico.
