The commissioners voted 2-1 Thursday to create the Luna County Community and Economic Advisory Committee, which the commissioners say will advise them on matters related to business, industry, community and economic development.
Commission Chairman Jay Spivey was the dissenting vote, saying his concern was that the mission of the committee was to report back to the county commission, putting the commissioners in the exact position they are in now but “going in circles.”
The newly created committee will be comprised of seven members appointed by the commissioners, including a representative from each commission district, the city of Deming, the village of Columbus, the Chamber and MainStreet.
In other action, the commissioners tabled a resolution to combine the county’s four volunteer fire departments into two departments because Luna County Fire Chief Luis Malina was out of town and unable to attend the meeting.
The commissioners are expected to consider the resolution at their next meeting on August 14th.
