DEMING – The Luna County commissioners unanimously approved a resolution Friday requesting Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham consider local input regarding the reopening of Luna County businesses.
Commission Chair John Sweetser said the resolution was prompted by the devastating effects state-mandated closures have had on small, local businesses and their employees.
Sweetser said small businesses are the backbone of Deming and Luna County, and he considers each and every one of them to be essential.
The resolution asks the governor to recognize and take input from a local task force comprised of representatives from Deming, Columbus, and Luna County on matters related to the reopening of local businesses.
Sweetser said public input received during Friday’s virtual special meeting was overwhelmingly in support of the resolution.
County Manager Chris Brice said the people living in Luna County understand the business and economic situation here much better than officials residing in Santa Fe, and therefore should be part of the decision-making process.
Brice said the resolution will be sent to Gov. Lujan Grisham early next week.
