
![]() The community and staff of Deming Public Schools and Ruben S. Torres Elementary worked together on Friday, April 19, to make the second annual Safe Routes To School (SRTS) Bike Rodeo at Ruben S. Torres a hugh success. Seventy-one students completed the bicycle course. In addition, all third, fourth and fifth graders participated in a bike safety seminar. The staff from Deming Public Schools included Local Champion Albert Montez, Benny Jasso, Ginger Jones, Anne Marie Mora, Ray Trejo, Leticia Montez, Suzy Au, and Kim Hernandez. Staff participating from Ruben S. Torres Elementary included Mark Edens. Connie Maag, Janet Espino and Blanca Duran. Deming Police Sgt. Alex Valdespino and Officer Lee Cook shared their expert bicycle knowledge with the participating students. Others helping to make the bike rodeo a success were Ben Archer representatives Maria Pacheco, Krystle Taylor, Anna Prieto, Roberto Diaz and Blanca Soto. Molina Healthcare’s mascot Dr. Cleo and representatives Alex Andrews and Aaron Arnold provided incentives and a smoothie machine run by students pedaling a stationary bike. NMSU County Extension Barbara Brokaw, Luna County Healthy Kids Nancy Sherman, and DHS Youth Council representatives Connie Groves, Alondra Lozano, Davie Marrufo and Emili Jones also provided support to the event. Safe Routes to School is provided through a grant from the New Mexico Department of Transportation in partnership with Deming Public Schools and the City of Deming. The support of the community and SRTS partners in making the Bike Rodeo a success is greatly appreciated.
