An 86-year-old woman and a 72-year-old man both said the caller left a message telling them they needed to call and clear up the matter.
Neither resident called, but Luna County Sheriff’s investigators attempted to call the number and were unsuccessful in reaching anyone.
IRS officials remind residents that they will never call to demand immediate payment and will not call about owed taxes without first sending a bill in the mail.
Also, the IRS will not demand that taxes are paid in a certain way, for instance with a prepaid debit card, nor will they ask for credit or debit card numbers over the phone or threaten to bring in police or other agencies to arrest someone for not paying.
Anyone receiving such a call is encouraged to report the call on the IRS Impersonation Scam Reporting web page or call 800-366-4484.
