Interim Assistant County Manager Chris Brice confirmed they are getting quotes on tents to place on the lot previously used by National Guard troops assigned to the international border from 2006 through 2008.
City Administrator Aaron Sera said there is water and electricity to the site, but added that tents are prohibitively expensive without financial help from the state and federal government.
Brice said there are approximately 380 migrants currently housed in temporary shelters at the Southwestern New Mexico State Fairgrounds and an airport hangar.
He said the area is receiving between 150 and 170 migrants each day, and sending approximately 150 a day on to their next destination.
He also said they are picking up migrants who have been treated at Gila Regional Medical Center in Silver City. The migrants have been transported to the facility by Border Patrol agents in Lordsburg.
Brice said he knew of nine migrants who have been treated at the Deming hospital.
And there is now a Facebook page to help disseminate information on the evolving temporary shelter situation. The Facebook page is listed under Deming Luna Operations.
