(Deming) – The Luna County Cooperative Extension Office’s free program to help participants manage chronic disease issues starts Wednesday.
The Chronic Disease Self-Management Program is an interactive group workshop for adults of all ages living with one or more ongoing health conditions like diabetes, arthritis, pain, cancer, high cholesterol, depression, asthma, heart disease and high blood pressure.
The program, which was developed and tested at Stanford University, focuses on building skills for improving pain management, nutrition, exercise, medication use, emotions and communication with doctors.
The weekly workshop sessions will be held from 4:30-7 p.m. each Wednesday beginning this Wednesday, August 17th, and running through September 28th, at the Luna County Extension office, 210-B Poplar St. in Deming.
The sessions will be led by certified workshop leaders Laynee Kuenstler and Aldemar Madrid.
Call the Luna County Extension Office at 546-8806 to sign up for the free program. Family, friends and caregivers also are welcome to attend.
Charter School Board Meets Monday
(Deming) – The Deming Cesar Chavez Charter High School Governance Council will meet in special session Monday morning.
Included on the agenda is a memorandum of understanding with IDEAL NM, the issuance of a purchase order for Fuel Education – an anywhere learning program, and a revision to the charter school contract pertaining to parental involvement.
The meeting is set to begin at 7:45 a.m. Monday, August 15th, in the board room of Deming Cesar Chavez Charter High School, 315 East First St.
The meeting will be open to the public.

(Deming) – Here’s the area crime report:
Ross Shannon, age 23, was arrested on a Magistrate warrant for battery against a household member and on an Adult Probation and Parole Office order for a probation violation… Juan Martinez, age 18, was arrested for interference with officers…
Matthew Baca, age 19, was arrested on a District Court warrant for a probation violation… James Goldman, age 24, was arrested on a District Court warrant for a probation violation… Raymond Espinosa, age 43, of Las Cruces, was arrested on a District Court arrest warrant… and Joseph Wilson, age 29, was arrested on a Magistrate and a Municipal warrant – both for failure to appear.
Also, a laptop computer valued at $2,000 was taken from a business located off J-Street… and a counterfeit $50-bill was discovered by a resident who had been asked to make change for someone.
