Because of summer’s likelihood of increased stress on pets, which increases runaways and shelter demand, the Deming-Luna County Humane Society is continuing its “Christmas in July” tradition.
The shelter, located at 2135 Onate Drive in Deming’s Industrial Park, will be adorned with festive holiday decorations to encourage the giving spirit usually associated with the Christmas season in December.
Board President Sande Foster said donations typically decrease during the summer, and the summer is when they need the most help.
She added that during the summer months, the shelter usually sees an increase in its kitten and puppy populations.
Needed most are contributions of blankets, towels, pet food, treats, kitty litter, and cleaning products like detergent and bleach. There’s a particular need for canned and dry puppy and kitten food, small pet beds and monetary contributions to assist with puppy vaccinations.
Receipts for tax purposes are available upon request since the shelter is a non-profit organization.
Donations can be made during the regular business hours, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, and 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays.
