Deming Fire Chief Edgar Davalos said his department responded to the fire call at 1111 South Gold at just before 5 p.m. Tuesday with three trucks and eight firefighters.
Davalos said the homeowner had been attempting to cook in the backyard on a disc grill when embers blew out of the cooking area.
The homeowner said he thought he had extinguished all of the embers that had escaped, but was later informed by his daughter that their shed was on fire.
Davalos said the homeowner first attempted to put out the shed fire with a water hose, but called the Deming Fire Department for help once the fire met a fuel source inside the shed.
The fire quickly spread to a neighbor’s shed and utility trailer, and to the back of the homeowner’s house.
Davalos said the sheds and trailer were a total loss, and the home contents suffered extensive fire, heat, smoke and water damage.
Firefighters remained on the scene until 9 p.m.
