Jessica Moreno, director of the Community Health and Well Being Department, and Mayra Solis, director of the CASA program, were sworn in by District Court Judge Jennifer DeLaney on Monday, June 2 at the Sixth Judicial District Courthouse.
The Luna County CASA program, which serves children in Luna, Grant and Hidalgo Counties, is seeking more volunteers to help meet the needs of local children. Solis said, “Children are the most vulnerable participants in most court cases, and oftentimes, they’re unable to speak for themselves in proceedings,”
CASA volunteers are appointed by judges to advocate for abused and neglected children, but without volunteers, there is no one to appoint. According to the national CASA mission, volunteers have ensured children do not get lost in the “overburdened legal and social service system” and that they do not “languish in inappropriate group or foster homes.”
Volunteers stay with each case until the child is placed in a safe and permanent home
