DEMING - Luna County 4-H members gathered on Thursday, Feb. 5th at Pepper’s Supermarket for their annual Food Link shopping spree. For the past several years, Luna County 4-H members have worked in conjunction with Luna County Farm and Livestock Bureau and BorderBelles to purchase about $1,200 worth of groceries for the Healing House, Luna County's shelter for victims of domestic violence.
The Healing House provides the group with a shopping list of needed items and 4-Her’s shop for the specified groceries. The list includes everything from fresh produce and meats, to bottled water and canned goods.
4-H is the largest nationally recognized youth organization in the world. The goal of 4-H is to develop citizenship, leadership, responsibility and life skills through experiential learning programs using positive youth development approaches. Members range from age 5-19 and can participate in many activities, projects, and community service at local, state and even national levels.
The BorderBelles are part of the New Mexico CowBelles and strive to educate the general public about the nutritional value of beef, environmental stewardship, and industry practices of farmers and ranchers to sustain the integrity of the New Mexico Beef Industry.
Luna County Farm and Livestock Bureau is a branch of a national organization, “Farm Bureau." Farm Bureau is a free, independent, non-governmental and voluntary organization. Agriculture families are united for the purpose of analyzing agricultural problems and formulating action to achieve educational awareness and social advancement.
The agriculture-based community is supportive of the local 4-H group and are more than happy to help out with this 4-H community service project. This project instills the importance of community service and involvement for Luna County 4-H members.
