Last year, Deming and Luna County residents donated over 6,000 pounds of food.
Organizers say that while it is a nationwide food drive, all non-perishable food gathered in Luna County will stay in Luna County to benefit local food banks and shelters.
The local members of the National Association of Letter Carriers Branch 2905 say participation is simple: just leave a bag of non-perishable food at your mailbox this Saturday before your letter carrier arrives, and he or she will do the rest.
Items suggested for donation include canned meats and fish, canned soup, juice, pasta, vegetables, cereal, peanut butter and rice.
They ask donors to please refrain from donating food items that have passed their expiration dates and items in glass containers.
Again, this Saturday, May 13th, is the National Association of Letter Carriers' "Stamp Out Hunger" food drive – the largest single-day food drive held in 10,000 cities and towns in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands and Guam.
