Before she died, however, Hemming made Lamely promise to keep riding – for her. Since July of 2008, Lamely has put over 5000 miles in the saddle with no intentions of giving it up.
Lamely left Pine Bluffs, Wyoming, earlier this year, and headed toward southern New Mexico to enjoy the last remnants of warm weather. He has been recording his travels and hopes to stop long enough this winter to write a book about his last seven years on horseback.
Friends say Lamely and Big John have a camaraderie that is a pleasure to observe.
If you would like to learn more about Lamely and Big John’s travels, you can search them on the internet or stop by the Southwestern New Mexico State Fairgrounds in the Deming Industrial Park. If you honk your horn at the fairgrounds’ entrance, Lamely will come out and let you meet Big John.
Also, Lamely is looking for work while in the Deming area. Anyone willing to hire Lamely or offer help can reach him at (575) 519-9589.
