Beginning July 1st, 2015, all Deming municipal employees will be paid a minimum of $10.10 an hour – up from the state minimum wage of $7.50 an hour and the federal minimum wage of $7.25 an hour.
In the resolution passed by the city councilors, it states that today’s minimum wage is not enough for a single parent to reach even the most basic threshold of adequate living standards.
The resolution says the city employs on-average 160 people, although it does not indicate how many of those employees are full-time employees being paid minimum wage.
The resolution says the change will affect the pay scale and pay range for employees based on the July 1st increase.
The resolution also says the city encourages local governments and local businesses to consider a minimum wage increase to help promote adequate living standards in the community.
