Torres bilingual students grew eleven percentage points from the 2013-14 school year with sixty-nine percent of English-language learners meeting the Annual Measurable Achievement Objective 1.
Principal Connie Maag said the key was integrating dual-language students with English-only students during the students’ English strand, adding that 100% of their first grade students made growth.
Having all dual-language students integrated into the regular classrooms meant the students had more exposure to English speakers.
Of course, having students change between four different teachers meant those teachers had to be teaching the same material at the same time.
The teachers reported that coordinating with their peers was challenging, but they worked together to make certain they were all on the same page.
The Annual Measurable Achievement Objective 1 for 2015 was met when at least 50% of English-language learners showed at least a 0.5% gain in one year.
Other gain measures will be analyzed when PARCC scores are made available in the fall.
