The newly created LEADS program reportedly will leverage over $176,000 to supplement the work of local communities statewide in their efforts to diversify their economy and create good-paying jobs that have a multiplier effect.
The Southern Luna County Economic and Community Development Corporation in Columbus was awarded $5,000.
The application says the Columbus entity will be setting up a community garden.
Local residents will be provided with a raised garden bed in the community garden and, under the supervision of expert and Master Gardeners, will be taught how to grow vegetables, fruits and flowers in an efficient and resource-effective manner.
The garden itself also will become a testing and demonstration garden for specialty crops that are both appealing to the public and manageable in the Luna County climate and soil.
All trainings and information will be provided in both English and Spanish.
