(Deming) – Libertarian Senate Candidate Gary Johnson appeared at a public event in Luna County Monday – just two weeks after officially entering the race.
The event at St. Clair Winery was hosted by local Libertarian Rebecca Lescombes, and gave residents a chance to find out what Johnson is bringing to the race as he attempts to unseat incumbent Sen. Martin Heinrich.
Johnson, a two-term New Mexico governor, said his biggest issue is the nation’s deficit, estimated at $833 billion, and the looming consequences of the country’s unchecked spending.
He said he was concerned there were no reductions in spending to go along with President Trump’s 2017 tax cuts.
Johnson, who described himself at fiscally conservative and socially liberal, said as an elected Libertarian he could serve as a swing vote in the Senate.
He added that he would like to see what he called “Uber-everything,” meaning a business-model shift in the country to consumer-driven on-demand service providers that are not subsidized with government dollars – the model successfully used by Uber’s on-demand transportation system.
