
Irwin announced earlier that she will be retiring after her current term ends.
Irwin was complimented by Democrat and Republican representatives alike, who praised her tireless representation of her constituents, her integrity and adherence to principles, and her kindness to others.
Republican Nate Gentry, the majority floor leader, said Irwin set the standard for how people should treat each other.
Democrat Representative Debbie Rodella said Irwin worked alongside her as vice-chair of the House Business and Industry Committee, and always voted for her district and never strayed from her duty as a legislator.
Democrat Carl Trujillo, who shared an office with Irwin, said Dona always knew why she was sent to Santa Fe – to represent her people back home.
“Strong,” “fearless” and “unwavering,” were among the adjectives used to describe Irwin in her commitment to District 32 constituents.
Many members of Irwin’s family were present on the floor of the New Mexico House of Representatives as Irwin was recognized.
