Luna County Sheriff’s Lieutenant Kelly Gannaway said 51-year-old Mary Bautista, and her passenger, 50-year-old Frank Bautista, suffered neck and other injuries in the accident on Highway 180 just north of Diaz Produce Stand.
Gannaway said 18-year-old Oscar Calderon was driving a 1999 Chevrolet Tahoe south on the Silver City Highway at about 3:45 p.m. Tuesday when he saw some family members walking on the roadside.
Calderon decided to give them a ride, so he reportedly pulled onto the shoulder, waited for a car to pass, and then attempted to pull a U-turn but pulled into oncoming traffic and was struck by a 2006 Chevrolet Trailblazer being driven south on the Silver City Highway by Mary Bautista.
Gannaway said Calderon and his passenger were uninjured.
Calderon was cited for careless driving and driving without a license.
