The new port is being touted as a way to increase tourism and economic development in New Mexico, as well as improve security and modernization efforts along the southern border.
Pearce told the crowd gathered for the groundbreaking ceremony that the new Columbus port of entry is a key investment for Luna County and reaffirms the federal government’s commitment to improving Customs and Border Patrol’s ability to effectively and efficiently complete inspections at the Columbus crossing, while not interfering with trade and commerce.
The new port is an $85.6 million investment of federal funds in Luna County designed to expand the current border crossing facilities to accommodate increases in car, commercial and pedestrian traffic.
Construction plans include a new main building, commercial and noncommercial inspection facilities, additional pedestrian processing, export facilities, a hazardous materials containment area, and increased parking capacity.
