Deming Mayor Benny Jasso has declared Friday, July 31st, “Barbara Schreiber Day” in Deming.
Schreiber, together with her late husband, Vernon, founded Deming Helping Hand.
The mayoral proclamation signed Tuesday says that the Schreibers moved to Deming from California 18 years ago and began reaching out to the less affluent in Deming by supplying food and other essentials to people in need out of their garage.
The Schreibers received nonprofit status for what became Deming Helping Hand, Inc. in 2004, and began operating out of a building at the Luna County Courthouse Park and the local Masonic Lodge.
Then in 2006, the Schreibers, with additional help, purchased a warehouse in the Deming Industrial Park to expand their original mission and serve more people in need.
The proclamation says that under Barbara’s direction, Deming Helping Hand, Inc. purchases $5,000 in food commodities to be distributed for the month and also assists families with utilities on occasion.
Schreiber is being recognized for her service, generosity, and compassion to the citizens of Deming and Luna County.
