DEMING - New Mexico State Police are investigating a fatal crash that took place around noon last Saturday.
The Deming Headlight is reporting that State Police spokesperson Philip Vargas said that a collision involving a Luna County Sheriff’s Office vehicle and a passenger car resulted in the death of an infant.
Luna County Sheriff Mike Eby said that the crash was “a tragedy to everybody involved” but referred all questions by the media to the New Mexico State Police.
State police report that the crash occurred while Luna County deputies were heading to Columbus to a reported burglary in progress call.
The New Mexico Department of Transportation issued an advisory Saturday of a crash occurring on State Road 11 around milepost 28.
Police state that the unit had its emergency lights and siren activated.
The other vehicle was described as a white 2012 Nissan Altima which police say attempted to make a left turn in front of the approaching unit, leading to a collision at the intersection of State Road 11 and Voorhies Road.
The infant, who was buckled into a car seat inside the Altima, was pronounced dead at Mimbres Memorial Hospital.
The driver of the car was also transported to the hospital with injuries described as non-life threatening. Two deputies were also seen at the hospital and released.
The NMSP did not report that any charges or citations had been issued over the crash.
