Department of Public Safety Motor Transportation Officer Alan Ballinas said 83-year-old Robert White of Avondale, Arizona, was transported from the crash site directly to a Native Air helicopter ambulance waiting to take him to a trauma center in El Paso, Texas.
Ballinas said White suffered head, chest and back injuries in the accident that occurred at 10 a.m. Thursday just south of Pear Street where a road crew was setting up cones to do repair work on State Road 11 or the Columbus Highway.
White was driving a 1996 Ford pickup north on the Columbus Highway when he struck the back of a signage truck that was stopped as crew members finished setting up detour cones.
Ballinas said detour signs had already been deployed, and a witness to the accident said it appeared White was looking down and may not have seen the signs.
