HELP-New Mexico Center Manager Crystal Pena, who served as the coalition’s representative, shared successes that the group has had over the past three-and-a-half years working in Luna County.
Funding for the group, which has a broad representation of daycare, public health, teen pregnancy prevention and education professionals, comes from various government grants.
Highlighted local programs were Parents as Teachers, Early Childhood Development, St. Joseph home visitation and the local Head Start programs.
Pena told attendees that the coalition has shown success in helping Luna County residents with young children, and is looking to track those who receive early childhood assistance over many years.
Pena also said they are facing a lack of transportation in the county, funding shortfalls and changes in laws that affect children.
The group’s next meeting will be held Friday, April 8th, beginning with breakfast at 8 a.m. at the Quality Inn. The meeting is open to the public and the group is seeking new members.
