Deming Police Chief Brandon Gigante said officers found a 2004 Nissan Titan pickup abandoned in a yard by a driver who apparently fled after striking the tree.
Gigante said blood was discovered on the shattered windshield.
Officers reported that it appeared, based on skid marks, that the driver was travelling east on Pear Street at a high rate of speed and lost control of the truck just before crashing into the tree on the southwest corner of Iron and Pear.
Neighbors heard a loud noise at about 4 a.m. Tuesday and found the truck but no driver.
The truck had heavy front-end damage and the airbag had deployed.
Gigante said the truck was towed and his officers were following up with the owner.
