(Deming) – In the special school district bond election held Tuesday Deming Public School Officials asked voters to authorize the issuance of up to $27 million of additional general obligation bonds to build a new high school and replace the intermediate school.
The Bond Issue was approved by voters, 1500 for and 823 against the measure.
The new bonds will not raise property tax bills because school officials say the bonds will be issued in amounts and times designed to maintain a stable tax rate.
The cost of building a new high school on the site of the current school is estimated to be $73.5 million. Of that amount, $21.75 million would come from the bond proceeds, and the remaining $51.75 million would come from the state.
The second project, building a new intermediate school near the Old Lordsburg Highway and Florida Street, has a projected cost of $17.7 million, of which $5.25 million would come from bond proceeds and $12.45 million would come from the state.
Tuesday’s election was the first to use the new county voting convenience centers. A Break down of votes at the different centers went like this… The Mimbres Valley Learning Center… 402 in favor 288 against… Holy Family Parish Hall… 519 in favor with 172 against… and the Columbus Village Library… 72 in favor with 33 opposed… Early votes were 442 in favor with 277 against… and Absentee votes were 65 in favor with 53 against. A total of 2, 323 residents went to the polls and cast a ballot.
