The project’s scope includes a security retrofit of the current facility, removal of the shipping containers that were converted into jail cells, and a 288 bed expansion. There will be a net gain of about 140 beds after the project is completed.
County Manager Ira Pearson said that because the project is such a major investment by taxpayers, they are planning for the long term.
The public is invited to attend the groundbreaking.
Following the groundbreaking, anyone interested in providing services or materials for the project is encouraged to attend a meet-and-greet with the project’s general contractor, architect and county staff from noon to 1 p.m. Thursday in the basement of the Luna County Courthouse.
A media release said the meet-and-greet is intended for local businesses such as electricians, plumbers, fencing companies, hardware stores, hotels, equipment companies, concrete suppliers, and others.
The project’s architectural firm, Wilson & Co., will be providing food.
Individuals looking for employment should wait until the project’s job fair, slated for 9 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 26th, at the Mimbres Valley Learning and Special Events Center, 2300 E. Pine St.
