Associate Superintendent Dana Irby said Memorial and Torres elementaries were among the schools receiving awards Friday from the Bilingual Division of the New Mexico Public Education
Department. The awards were based on criteria from the federal No Child Left Behind/Title III programs.
Irby said that criteria included outstanding growth in English language acquisition by English-language learners as measured on a state language assessment.
Memorial Elementary earned an Exemplary Award reserved for schools with established improvement, while Torres received an Emerging Award, designed to recognize schools showing
improvement.
The recognitions Friday were part of Bilingual Education Day at the state legislature.
The celebration and award presentation was held in the State Capitol Rotunda in Santa Fe.
